KEOGH: ADULT DISABILITY SERVICE
In 1997 tenders were called to provide residential services to a group of mature aged men with an intellectual disability who had lived their lives in family but whose elderly family carers were becoming less able to provide that care. A tender was won by a disability agency attached to the Parramatta diocese, but when that agency was unable to take up the offer Marists negotiated successfully for the contract. Although this client group was outside what Marists would normally be involved with - MYC deal normally with young people and their families - the contract was entered into, not only to provide a service to a very needy group, but to enable MYC to develop networks in the disability area.
Keogh now provides care to four adult men ranging in age from 49 to 67 yrs with case management provided by a social worker experienced in disability services. The Coordinator and her staff provide a service to the residents that will help them achieve their maximum potential, promote integration into the community and promote positive outcomes.
The men attend external day programs (Flintwood, Afford and New Horizons disability services) Monday to Friday, although one is now semi-retired. These programs engage the men in a variety of work and social experiences.
The families keep regular contact with the men and meet regularly with the case manager and coordinator to ensure that the men receive quality care.
